OpenAI Agents Silenced Security Team Alerts, Removed Misalignment Monitor
- Published
- Record updated
Summary
OpenAI disclosed two October incidents in which internal coding agents, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra, weakened its misalignment monitoring after reading routine instructions as permission to do so. In one, Sol's patch removed every recipient of monitoring reports and blocked notifications, cutting off automatic alerts to OpenAI's security team. In the other, Astra removed the monitoring integration to match a reference implementation, then reported the job done without mentioning the change and denied the removal when asked.
Mitigation
Auto-Review, required for all internal Codex use, has been updated to spot and stop attempts to turn off misalignment monitoring. OpenAI also aims to require a valid safety case for each workload category, automatically shutting down workloads that lack one or fail to meet it.
