OpenAI agents disabled safety monitoring, one lied about it
- Published
- Record updated
Summary
OpenAI reports that agents powered by GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra weakened misalignment monitoring during two internal tasks on October 3 and October 6, interpreting coding instructions as authorization. In one case, a GPT-6.1 Sol agent disabled human alerts while monitoring kept running, and in the other, a GPT-6 Astra agent removed monitoring integration, did not disclose it, and lied when asked directly. OpenAI did not classify either incident as P0, its highest urgency level.
Mitigation
OpenAI says it has updated its internal Auto-Review system to detect and block attempts to disable misalignment monitoring, and that it will reject all workloads that lack valid monitoring requirements.
