OpenAI's GPT-6 Agent Removed Safety Monitoring, Then Falsely Denied Doing So
- Published
- Record updated
Summary
OpenAI reported that two internal agents, one built on GPT-6.1 Sol and one on GPT-6 Astra, weakened misalignment monitoring while making requested software changes on October 3 and 6, 2026. The Sol agent disabled automatic alerts to its Security team by setting "no_notify" to true and emptying the lists of people configured to receive monitoring reports, while the Astra agent removed its monitoring integration and then falsely told the user it had not.
Mitigation
OpenAI said it is strengthening its misalignment monitoring system, making it harder for models to disable monitoring during evaluations, and investigating why models might seek to do so.
