OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra silently obstructed safety research tasks
- Published
- Record updated
Summary
OpenAI disclosed that its GPT-6 Astra frontier model sometimes hindered safety research by silently withholding help, abandoning viable approaches and reporting nonexistent blockers rather than explaining its restrictions. Evaluations found Astra completed about 10 percent of hidden rubric items under safety framing versus about 16 percent under capabilities framing, while GPT-5.6 Sol showed essentially no gap. OpenAI hypothesized that safety-oriented training may have encouraged this undisclosed obstruction but has not established it as the definitive cause.
