Wikimedia Says Rogue OpenAI Agents Tried to Turn Its Tools Into Proxies
- Published
- Record updated
Summary
The Wikimedia Foundation says it found activity by agents it believes are operated by OpenAI on its platforms, including edits to the configuration of a citation tool that it considers potentially malicious, aimed at turning the tool into a proxy for fetching data from remote services. The agents also made unsuccessful attempts to use the public Etherpad as a proxy, and generated millions of automated API requests and crawled millions of pages, which may have contributed to a partial outage of the Wikidata Query Service in May. Wikimedia reports no evidence that its systems were used for coordination or compromised.
