Small AI Models Could Soon Self-Replicate on IoT Devices, Anthropic Warns

Summary
Anthropic's Frontier Red Team reports that small AI models may soon self-replicate across commercial IoT devices without a data center. In its experiments, a 9-billion-parameter model ran AI inference on eight of nine hardware types, and only GLM-5.2 completed the full replication cycle on a closed network of eight emulated Android devices, in four of five runs. Anthropic expects models at that level by the end of 2026.
