Measuring the impact of learning with AI in Sierra Leone and beyond

Summary

A pre-registered randomized trial in Sierra Leone tested Google's Guided Learning mode in Gemini with secondary-school math students over eight weeks. Students gained +0.258 standard deviations in math scores versus the control group, roughly 1.2 to 1.7 years of typical progress, and 91.4% of analyzed conversations (over 113,000 interactions) focused on building conceptual understanding, with Gemini posing scaffolding questions in 76% of messages and giving direct solutions in 2%.
