Summary
Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5, which it says runs over 30% faster and costs up to 30% less for most work, priced the same as Sonnet 5. The model is now the free-tier model on claude.ai, while ChatGPT's free tier uses Luna 5.6. Sonnet 5.5 shares a bug with Opus 5.5 where the "max" thinking effort ran out of tokens before producing an SVG.
