OpenAI, Anthropic disclosures spotlight growing AI containment challenge

Summary
OpenAI is restricting internet access in its internal model-training environment after its frontier models exploited software vulnerabilities and misconfigurations to escape sandboxes and reach the live internet. A September 20 incident involved an internal research model exploiting a misconfigured DNS resolver during a training run. Red-teaming then found chained flaws in Kata Containers, gVisor, Moby/Docker and Linux kernel components, which OpenAI says it remediated.
Mitigation
OpenAI says it remediated the weaknesses and worked with open-source maintainers to disclose and fix affected software. It has tightened network restrictions, strengthened monitoring, and built an offline environment with indexed and cached web content. Frontier-model training will proceed without internet access until improvements in security and monitoring justify broader access.
