How workers are unlocking new ways of working

Summary

OpenAI's research, based on more than 1.5 million work-related ChatGPT messages from April through July 2026, finds that workers increasingly return to tasks outside their occupations, turning cross-occupation AI use into recurring workflows. Among roughly 6,200 consistently observed workers, cross-occupation tasks rose from 13.1% of occupation-specific AI activity in April to 25.9% in July. The report suggests organizations should treat work design alongside access to AI tools when implementing AI strategies.
