AI race heats up as OpenAI flags alleged model-copying campaign

Summary
OpenAI said it identified and disrupted a coordinated campaign in which operators tried to extract protected reasoning from its AI models, and attributed a core cluster of the activity to individuals associated with Moonshot AI, developer of Kimi. The activity began in early July, peaked at 16,000 requests from more than 4,000 users over two days, and was fully disrupted by July 28. OpenAI said the operators did not breach its encryption, databases or stored user conversations, but manipulated model interactions to reproduce hidden reasoning.
