Wikipedia’s operator says a bad AI copyright ruling could threaten the open web

Summary
The Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit behind Wikipedia, filed an amicus brief in a set of AI copyright lawsuits, including publishers such as The New York Times against OpenAI and Microsoft, and took neither side. It argues that courts should legally protect large language models training on copyrighted work, but not chatbots reproducing that work for users. The foundation warns that an overly black-and-white ruling could deprive Wikipedians of useful AI-based tools or endanger the open web.
